The Mozambique-China Cultural Center in Maputo hosted, on the afternoon of Saturday, October 17, the ballet Hanya Machel, a show that portrayed the life and work of Samora Moisés Machel, the first President of independent Mozambique, through dance, music, and theater. Organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC), the initiative is part of the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Mbuzini accident, which happened on October 19, 1986, in South Africa, and claimed the lives of Samora Machel and his companions. The show covered different stages of the former statesman's life, from his childhood in Chilembene, Gaza Province, to the national liberation struggle, the declaration of Independence on June 25, 1975, and the building of the Mozambican state. The initiative, aimed mainly at children and young people, highlighted the role of culture in preserving historical memory, valuing national identity, and passing on values like patriotism, unity, and dedication to the country. The event was also marked by the awarding of the winning students, at the provincial level, in the Essay Contest about the Life and Work of Samora Machel, promoted by the Ministry of Education. The students received prizes and certificates of merit in recognition of their effort in reflecting on the journey and legacy of the former President. With these activities, the Ministry of Education and Culture reaffirms its commitment to promoting patriotic education and involving the new generations in preserving the history and cultural identity of Mozambique.
